On Our Way to Onnestad

We left for Onnestad, Sweden on Sunday, from Copenhagen. Note our nice rental Prius. Onnestad is the village where many of my Swedish ancestors lived their lives. A big thank you to Amy for doing such a wonderful job on the genealogy research, and to Lynn for giving me the research idea after her trip to Czechoslavakia. It made this trip much more special

As soon as we drove into Sweden, we noticed that the green fields, rolling hills, and small farms reminded us of eastern Nebraska. I can see how the landscape would have felt familiar to the area my ancestors left in Sweden. The weather would have been a big adjustment. Mid June in Sweden we are having 50-60 degree temperatures. People walk around bundled in jackets and scarves. I'm sure the Nebraska summers were brutal for them.

We saw many small brick houses with tile roofs. Often times a wooden door has an elaborate carving. The yards are tidy with trees and flowers.

This church was beautiful! We were driving along a single lane curving road, and it just appeared. it was located in a very small village. In front of the church was a cemetery which seems to be typical.
